THE IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN PICKLEBALL

 Pickleball is an interesting game, with rather easy rules and open for all. You could be in your 60s and still play pickleball with ease. That’s what makes pickleball so popular. You can play pickleball with another person, or a team, i.e. a doubles match. What’s most important in a game of doubles is communication. For good communication to happen, you first need to trust each other. There must be a team spirit and no superiority complex in the hearts of both the players in the same team. The moment you surrender your pride and ego for the greater good, you are halfway there to be a team player.

Beyond trust there’s just this one thing that’s left to do in pickleball, that’s to communicate and play. Here are a few points that’ll tell you about how, when and where effective communication becomes essential in the pickleball doubles game. 

• The most obvious time is when a ball returns and you and your partner need to decide who’s going to take the ball. It’s essential that you declare “mine” or “yours” as soon as you decide. If this is not done, the shot will automatically go to the advantage of your opponents. This decision can be taken before the match, or even during the match of who’ll do what. Make sure that you and your partner tune well. 

• Another communication requirement is when one of the two players has got a better angle of whether the ball is going off bounds or close the line. This player must give a clear partner to let the ball bounce before returning it. A quick “out” or “no” is enough. 

• The next communication need is when it’s line calling time. Generally, it’s the one who’s going to return the ball who doesn’t have to care about the tine. The other one however has to keep an eye on and communicate the same to his/her partner.

• The line calling goes especially when the team is receiving the serve. The non-receiving partner has to stay close to the kitchen line, angled to watch the serve.  As soon as he/she notices the ball to be in the service court, he/she should turn to the position of being ready. 

• There are times in a match when a player established on one side has to run to the other. In such moments the partner must be warned with a “switch” call so that there’s no confusion. As, several times when a player goes to answer such a shot, they might not be able to go back to their initial position instantly. 

• Sometimes there are hard or mistake shots that can cause you a point. In such situations, the team member who realises this first should warn the partner with a “stay back” call.
